Chemical Engineer CDR Report Sample
The Competency Demonstration Report Sample for Chemical Engineer includes all the necessary reports such as Three Career Episodes, Continuing Professional Development and Summary Statement. The Content of the Chemical Engineer CDR Report Sample is as follow:
Chemical Engineer Career Episode Report 1
Project Name: “Reaction Kinetics of Atenolol Epoxide based on Integral Method of Analysis for Batch Reactor Data”
Introduction: In first career episode, the author describes the project he did when he was pursuing his master’s in chemical engineering. This career episode is based on his graduation project named as; “Reaction Kinetics of Atenolol Epoxide based on Integral Method of Analysis for Batch Reactor Data”.
Background: The project was carried out to analyze and study the reaction kinetics of Atenolol Epoxide based on the integral method of analysis for batch reactor data. The Atenolol is a synthetic, beta selective (cardio selective) adrenoreceptor blocking agent, which is chemically described as benzeneacetamide, 4-[2’-hydroxy-3’-[(1-methyl) amino] propoxy]. The production of Atenolol requires the raw materials which are Epichlorohydrine (EPH), Parahydroxyphenylacetamide (PHPA), NaOH, DM, MonoIsoPropylAmine (MIPA), acetic acid, Hyflo, activated carbon, methanol, and HCl. In the world, the formed product (Atenolol) is known as the best drug for hypertension.
During the time, the responsibilities of the author were to:
- Performing a brief literature review and acquiring all the required data getting a comprehensive idea of the project
- Selecting a two-step synthesis of Atenolol
- Preparing the 1-[p-(carbamoylmethyl) phenoxy]-2, 3-epoxypropane with Epichlorohydrine, 4-hydroxyphenylacetamide, and benzyltrimethylammonium chloride
- Separating the crude products by means of recrystallization from MeOH to obtain 70% yield
- Designing an experimental setup to prepare the atenolol epoxide from PHPA
Chemical Engineer Career Episode Report 2
Project Name: “Development of PLA based Nanocomposites: Effect of Starch Nano Crystals as Nano fillers”
Introduction: In second career episode, the author explains the engineering skills he used when he was doing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). This career episode is based on his project named as; “Development of PLA based Nanocomposites: Effect of Starch Nano Crystals as Nano fillers”.
Background: The use of renewables materials for industrial applications is becoming imperative due to the increasing demand of alternatives to scarce and unrenewable petroleum supplies. In material science, research is focused on efficient, renewable and environmentally friendly materials to cope with petroleum scarcity while considering environmental concerns. Recently, the “green” nanocomposites materials emerge in the market, which are biodegradable, low cost, abundant, biocompatible, nontoxic, and renewable. This study involves the preparation of Polylactic acid (PLA) based nanocomposites with Starch nanocrystals (SNC) as fillers to improve the performance of biodegradable polymer-PLA. In order to maintain environmental sustainability, the development of low-cost bio-nanocomposites based on starch nanocrystals (SNC) is of great importance. The project was aimed to develop PLA based nanocomposites with waxy maize starch nanocrystals as Nano fillers that can enhance the mechanical and barrier properties to be suitable for packaging application.
During the time, the responsibilities of the author were to:
- Performing the acidic hydrolysis of waxy maize starch granules in 3.16 M H2SO4 solution
- Preparing the starch nanocrystals according to a previously described method by Angellier et al. (2004)
- Purchasing the waxy maize starch with high amylopectin content from Sigma Aldrich as it was economical for the project budget and favors dispersion in any polymer
- Preparing the nanocomposites using two methods- solvent casting evaporation and melt processing
- Studying the morphology of the prepared nanocomposite as well as of the WSNC using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
Chemical Engineer Career Episode Report 3
Project Name: “Development of Bio-Nanocomposites of Polylactic Acid (PLA) And Starch Nanocrystals (SNC)”
Introduction: In third career episode, the author explains the engineering skills he used when he was doing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). This career episode is based on hisproject named as; “Development of Bio-Nanocomposites of Polylactic Acid (PLA) And Starch Nanocrystals (SNC)”.
Background: The main objective of the project was to prepare study reports on a method for the preparation of bio-nanocomposites from polylactic acid (PLA) and SNC derived from acid hydrolysis of waxy maize starch. The PLA-SNC bio-nanocomposites were prepared by incorporating SNC at 1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt% by dispersing them in PLA matrix using dichloromethane as a solvent. During the project, the morphological, thermal, crystalline, and rheological properties of neat PLA, neat SNC, and PLA-SNC bio-nanocomposites were investigated to see the effect of SNC loading.
During the time, the responsibilities of the author were to:
- Conducting a brief literature review to analyzing the information in accordance with my project necessity
- Procuring the commercially available Polylactic acid, dichloromethane (DCM), and waxy maize starch (99% amylopectin) from Sigma-Aldrich
- Preparing the SNCs from hydrolysis of waxy maize starch using H2SO4 following the optimized procedure described by Angellier et al. (2004)
- Preparing the PLA-SNC bio-nanocomposites by incorporating SNC in PLA matrix at three different concentrations
- Examining the morphology of raw starch and SNC by FEI Quanta 200 scanning electron microscopy (ESEM)
Chemical Engineer Summary Statement
In his summary statement the author presents all the competency elements required for Professional ChemicalEngineer. There are cross references in the summary statement to the relevant paragraph of the episodes, as explained in the Engineers Australia migration skills assessment booklet. His Summary Statement is in complete accordance with the today’s requirements of the Engineers Australia.
