Project Name: “Urban Water and Wastewater System”

Introduction: In second career episode, the author explains the engineering skills he used when he was completing his Bachelor of Technology in Environmental engineering. This career episode is based on his graduation project named as; “Urban Water and Wastewater System”.

Background: The focal objective of the project was to design a new wastewater treatment plant for a suburb in a major city, with the proper wastewater treatment design process. The detail design process and calculations were eventually summarized in a report, with a necessary appendix. In this project, it was also required to design both preliminary and primary wastewater treatment facilities in detail. The wastewater treatment facilities at both stages were required to handle a peak flow of 36,112,600 liters per day and an Average Dry Weather Flow (ADWF) of 11,887,200 liters per day which both have taken infiltration flow at sewers into account.

During the time, the responsibilities of the author were to:

  • Completing a hydraulic design for screening and grit removal of the preliminary treatment in detail
  • Designing circular sedimentation tank of the primary treatment
  • Designing flow control devices including weir and effluent launder
  • Generating a complex Excel spreadsheet to check if the preliminary and primary treatment facilities design is feasible
  • Assigning tasks to other members according to their specialist

Project Name: “Road Design”

Introduction: In third career episode, the author explains the engineering skills he used when he was completing his Bachelor of Technology in Environmental engineering. This career episode is based on his graduation project named as; “Road Design”.

Background: The main aim of this project was designing one alternative route based on horizontal and vertical alignments, earthwork, and cross-section calculations.Three alternative bypass roads for the Boulder Highway around Parksville were designed to avoid a lot of transportation vehicles passing through the Parksville town, which could disturb the existing and future developments of the town. The surroundings of Parksville were not flat or of uniform characteristics, which can easily be developed.

During the time, the responsibilities of the author were to::

  • Identifying State Road Authority’s (SRA) project requirement
  • Stating relevant assumptions for the design of the route
  • Setting all the design parameters as required by “Austroads Guide to Road Design, Part 3: Geometric Design, 2010”
  • Selecting one alternative alignment and draw it on the graphs
  • Performing a horizontal alignment calculation, set up relevant formulas in excel, by inputting only radius, deflection angle and PI chainage
